Encountering a territorial dispute between Narcissus Flycatchers!
ほとんど収穫のないまま今日の探鳥ウォーキングの終盤に差し掛かろうとする段になって、２羽の小鳥が近接した状態で辺りを猛スピードで飛んでいるところに出くわしました。
時々、羽を広げ「ディスプレイ」のポーズをとると同時に威嚇音を発していました。
背中の黄色が目に入ってきたのでキビタキのオス同士の喧嘩だと分かりました。
他の人からの情報として、バードウォッチング仲間から前日に３羽のキビタキがバトルを繰り広げていたと教えてもらった直後のことでした。
Towards the end of today’s bird-watching walk with almost no harvest, I came across two small birds flying around at high speed in close proximity.
Occasionally, they spread their wings and posed for a “display” while making threatening sounds.
I noticed the yellow on their backs and realized it was a fight between two Narcissus Flycatchers.
As information from a walker, it was just after I was told by a fellow birdwatcher of mine that three Japanese Narcissus Flycatchers had battled the day before.

この個体には今季初めて出会いました。まだ完全には成鳥になっておらず、頭部や翼の茶色が目立ちます。
I met this individual for the first time this season. It is not yet fully mature, and its brown head and wings stand out.
縄張り争いに繰り広げていたキビタキの片割れです。
翼を半開きにして尾羽根を広げています。ディスプレイは求愛行動としてだけでなく、争いの場合も相手を威嚇するために行われます。
バトルそのものを撮影することができなかったのが残念です。
This is one half of the Narcissus Flycatcher pair that was engaging in a territorial dispute.
It has its wings half-open and its tail feathers spread. Displays are performed not only as a courtship behavior but also to intimidate opponents during conflicts.
It’s a shame that I couldn’t capture the battle itself.

あとがき｜Wrap-Up
小鳥の威嚇音はバードウォッチングをしていると時々聞くのですが、激しいバトルを目の前で観察できる機会はほとんどありません。
今日は貴重な体験をしました。
バトルはほとんどが逆光や陰の中で行われたので、キビタキの美しい本来の色が写真に再現できなかったのが残念です。
順光の中で撮れていたら言うことなかったのですが…。
I occasionally hear warning calls of small birds while birdwatching, but I rarely have the opportunity to witness an intense battle right in front of me.
Today, I had a valuable experience.
Unfortunately, most of the battle took place in backlight or shadows, so the beautiful original colors of the Narcissus Flycatcher birds could not be reproduced in photos.
It would have been perfect if they had been captured in good lighting conditions….
