今日の探鳥ウォーキングでは、カワラヒワの水飲みシーンや青いルリビタキを観察＆撮影することができました。
それ自体とても印象的な出合いだったのですが、今日の主役はコゲラとします。
というのも、かなり近くで撮らせてくれ、精緻な描写も得られたからです。
In today’s birding walk, I was able to observe and take pictures of an oriental greenfinch drinking water and a red-flanked bluetail, both of which were very impressive encounters. However, the star of today’s walk was the Japanese Pygmy Woodpecker. This was because it allowed me to take photos at a very close distance, which resulted in detailed and precise shots.

ここは未舗装の道路の真ん中にできた水溜りです。この２，３週間、この水溜りにやって来ては水浴びをしたり水を飲んだりする野鳥を何種類か見てきました。アカハラ、マミチャジナイ、シロハラ、メジロ、ジョウビタキなどです。今日は、シロハラとカワラヒワがやって来ました。
このような水溜りが彼らの水場になっていることに驚きもし可愛そうにも思いました。もっと綺麗な水場がないものでしょうか。
This is a puddle in the middle of an unpaved road. Over the past few weeks, I have seen several species of wild birds come here to bathe and drink water. Among them are Brown-headed Thrush, Eyebrowed Thrush, Pale Thrush, Japanese White-eye, and Daurian Redstart. Today, Pale Thrush and Oriental Greenfinch came to the puddle.
I was both surprised and saddened to see that such puddles have become their source of water. I hope there are cleaner and more suitable sources of water available for them.

Japanese White-eyes love camellia nectar at this time of the year.

コゲラ｜Japanese Pygmy Woodpecker
コゲラが盛んに鳴き声を発していました。こういう場面では珍しいことです。おそらく、パートナーとコミュニケーションを取ろうとしていたのでしょうね。
The Japanese Pygmy Woodpecker was making frequent calls, which is unusual behavior for them. It was probably trying to communicate with its partner in this situation.
ルリビタキ｜Red-flanked Bluetail
ルリビタキのオスの成鳥としては感動的で稀に見る個体です。こんなに美しい個体に出合ったのは初めてかもしれません。
しかし、近くに来てくれませんので、30ｍくらい離れたところから撮影するしかありません。したがって、写真をアップするにも大きくトリミングする必要があります。
This male adult Red-flanked Bluetail is an impressive and rare individual. It may be the first time I have ever encountered such a beautiful individual. However, it does not come close enough to me, so I have to take pictures from a distance of about 30 meters. Therefore, I need to heavily crop the photos to upload them.
あとがき｜Wrap-Up
私にとって、バードウォッチングには２つの楽しみ方があります。１つは、野鳥、特に、小鳥たちを撮影することです。もう一つは、観察そのものです。
今日は、観察がとても楽しかったです。水場でのシーンを目の当たりにすることができましたし、エナガやコゲラの行動を見ていて繁殖の準備段階に入ったのだなと気付くことができました。
素晴らしき出合いに感謝です。
For me, there are two ways to enjoy birdwatching. One is taking pictures of birds, especially small birds. The other is simply observing them.
Today, I had a great time observing them. I was able to witness scenes of birds at the water source, and watching the behaviors of such little birds as Long-tailed Tits and Japanese pygmy woodpeckers made me realize they are getting ready for breeding season.
I am grateful for these wonderful encounters.
