今日の翡翠…カワセミのペア、巣穴掘り開始か！？

Kingfisher Pair Begins Digging a Hole?!

撮影している時には分からなかったのですが、家に帰って撮影した写真をチェックしている時にオスもメスも嘴の先に土が付いていることに気が付きました。

「いよいよ巣穴作りを始めたのか！？」と思ったのですが…。

ところが、最初の出合いで撮影した写真にだけ土が確認できますが、２回目以降の出合いでは嘴から土が無くなっていました。水の中に飛び込んだ時に落ちてきれいになったのでしょうね。

どうなっているのでしょうね。

I didn’t notice it while taking the photos, but while I was checking the pictures at home, I noticed that both the male and female had some soil on the tip of their beaks.

I thought to myself, “Have they finally started digging their nest hole?!”

But then, I also realized that I could only see the soil on the beaks in the photos I took during our first encounter.

I didn’t see any soil on their beaks in later encounters.

Perhaps it fell off when they dove into the water and cleaned themselves up.

I wonder what’s going on.

あとがき｜Wrap-Up

連日、カワセミの観察ポイントに出かけているのは、繁殖活動に伴う興味深い行動（例えば、巣穴堀り、求愛給餌、交尾など）が見られるのではないかと期待してのことです。

今日はその巣穴堀りの片鱗が見られました。

また、交尾するのではないかと思われる行動を取りもしましたが、結局は交尾には至りませんでした。

明日に期待しましょう。

I have been going to the kingfisher observation point every day, hoping to see some interesting behaviors (such as digging a hole, courtship feeding, mating, etc.) associated with their breeding activities.

Today I saw a glimpse of their hole digging.

They also showed some behavior that made me think they were going to mate, but they didn’t end up doing so.

Let’s hope for tomorrow.
