Observing without sense of time, the peaceful moments of a kingfisher pair

今日は３時間をカワセミの観察と撮影に費やしました。

最初の２時間は茂みの中を時折ペアが行ったり来たりしていました。その間、特に繁殖に関係するような活動は見られませんでした。

最後の１時間は、動きがまったく見られませんでした。飛び去った様子はなかったので、茂みの中にいたはずだと考えています。

予想としては、求愛給餌が見られたり、巣穴掘りもするかもしれないと思っていました。

しかし、予想に反して、時々鳴き声を発したり短い距離を移動するだけでした。

時間はただただ穏やかに流れるだけでした。

一体、このペアは繁殖活動のどの段階にあるのでしょうか。

I spent three hours today observing and photographing kingfishers. For the first two hours, the pair occasionally moved around within the bushes, but I didn’t observe any activities related to breeding.

During the last hour, there was no movement at all. Since there was no sign of them flying away, I assume they were still in the bushes.

I expected to see courtship feeding or nest digging, but contrary to my expectations, they only made occasional calls and moved short distances.

Time just flowed peacefully.

I wonder what stage of breeding this pair is in.

次の６枚は逆光写真です。
太陽の光が水面で乱反射してキラキラ輝いていました。その手前にカワセミがいたので眩し過ぎて肉眼ではカワセミを確認することができないほどでした。

これは一般的には極めて不利な撮影条件ですが、逆光条件は時としてドラマチックあるいは印象的なショットを生み出すことがあります。

今日は敢えて逆行写真に挑戦し、水面の輝きを生かしつつカワセミをシルエットで撮影し、後から編集時に暗部を明るく露出補正をしカワセミのディテールが分かるように仕上げました。

多少不自然ではありますが、カワセミを鑑賞することが目的なのでこのようにレタッチを行いました。

The next six photos are backlit photos. The sun’s light was reflected on the water surface and sparkled brightly. It was so dazzling that I couldn’t see the kingfisher in front of it with my naked eye.

This is generally a very disadvantageous shooting condition, but backlighting can sometimes create dramatic or impressive shots.

Today I deliberately challenged myself to take backlit photos, capturing the kingfisher in silhouette while making use of the brightness of the water surface. Later during editing, I adjusted the exposure to brighten the shadow areas, so that the details of the kingfisher could be seen.

It may look a bit unnatural, but I did this retouching because my purpose is to appreciate the kingfisher.
