A Summer Bird, the Blue-and-White Flycatcher, Arrived at My Favorite Mountain Birdwatching Spot!
とりわけ鳴き声が美しいとされる『日本三鳴鳥』の一種、オオルリが今季初めてお気に入りの山のフィールドにやって来ました。
３日前にはまったく気配がなかったのですが、今日は行き帰りの山道でも数か所で鳴き声を聞くことができました。
フィールドに着くやいなや鳴き声に惹かれて川辺りに行くと、梢でオオルリが囀っている姿を見ることができました。
今季初めての出会いに感激でした。
One of the “Three Singing Birds of Japan,” the Blue-and-White Flycatcher, known for its particularly beautiful voice, has come to my favorite mountain field for the first time this season.
Just three days ago, there was no sign of it at all, but today I was able to hear its singing in several places along the mountain path on my way there and back.
As soon as I arrived at the field, I was drawn to the sound of its song and went to the riverbank, where I could see the Blue-and-White Flycatcher singing in a treetop.
I was deeply moved by my first encounter with it this season.

ヒガラ｜Coal Tit
英語でヒガラを “coal tit” と呼ぶ理由は、その羽の色が石炭のように黒く見えることに由来しています。炭鉱労働者が石炭の中で働いていたため、彼らが使用する帽子の周りにはしばしば煤が付着し、この黒い帽子を “coal scuttle” と呼びました。同様に、黒い帽子のように見えるヒガラの頭部と背中の羽毛が、この鳥に “coal tit” という名前を与えることにつながりました。
The reason why the bird called “Higara” in Japanese is called “coal tit” in English is because the color of its feathers appears black like coal. Coal mine workers often had soot around their hats due to working with coal, and these black hats were called “coal scuttles.” Similarly, the feathers on the head and back of the “coal tit” that appear like a black hat led to this bird being named “coal tit.”

三鳴鳥のひとつに数えられる、渓流の青い歌い手オオルリは最も人気のある夏鳥の一種であり、多くのバーダーを魅了して止まない。
そのようなオオルリに出会え撮影できたのはラッキーでした。
次はもう一種の人気の夏鳥、キビタキにこのフィールドで出会いたいものです。
The Blue-and-white Flycatcher, a blue singer of mountain streams and one of the Three Singing Birds of Japan, is one of the most popular summer birds and never ceases to fascinate many birders.
It was lucky to be able to encounter and photograph such a Blue-and-white Flycatcher.
Next, I would like to meet another popular summer bird, the Narcissus Flycatcher, in this field.
