Witnessing Kingfisher Mating: A Rare and Exciting Moment!
いつものポイントでカワセミたちのお気に入りの枝を順番に見ていると、メスを発見！
雌雄が鳴き交わす鋭い鳴き声も聞こえてきます。
メスをファインダー内におさめると同時にオスが視野の中に入って来ました。すると、いきなりメスの背中に乗りました。
交尾です！
その瞬間を観察できました。幸運な偶然に感謝です。
同時に、この番（つがい）が繁殖活動の過程を順調に１段ずつ進んでいることを確認できた瞬間でもありました。
交尾を観察できたことで、大まかにですが、抱卵や抱雛の開始日など子育ての各過程の切り替わる日を特定できます。
今日の交尾が第１日目だったのか、それとも最終日だったのかによって、１週間ほどの誤差が生じます。これが最大の不確実ポイントです。
この不確実性のために、現時点では、巣立ちの日を推測すると最大誤差が10日～２週間ほどになります。
しかし、観察を続けることで最終的には２～３日の範囲内で特定できる可能性があります。
私のように撮影だけでなく観察も好きなバーダーさんたちにとっては大きな楽しみとなりますね。
As I was looking at the favorite branches of the kingfishers in my usual spot, I spotted a female!
I could hear the sharp cries of the male and female calling to each other.
As I focused my camera on the female, the male flew into view and suddenly landed on her back.
They were mating!
I was lucky enough to witness the moment, and it was also a confirmation that this pair was progressing smoothly through the breeding process.
By observing the mating, I can roughly determine the dates of each stage of parenting, such as the start of incubation and hatching.
However, due to the uncertainty of not knowing if today’s mating was the first or last day, there can be an error of about a week. This is the biggest uncertainty.
Currently, predicting the fledging date can have a maximum error of 10 days to 2 weeks due to this uncertainty.
But by continuing to observe, it may be possible to narrow down the date to within 2-3 days.
For birdwatchers like me who enjoy both observation and photography, it must be a great pleasure.

実は、交尾のシーンに出会う前に桜の撮影をしていました。
その時のカメラ設定のままで撮影してしまったので、思うようには撮れませんでした。
花の撮影と野鳥の撮影では、カメラの設定が大きく異なります。
シャッターを押した瞬間に設定ミスに気が付きましたが、もちろん、一瞬のシーンなのでそのまま撮るしか他にどうしようもありませんでした。
本当なら40枚ほど撮影できていたはずですが、このミスのために数枚しか撮影できませんでした。
今、この記事を書きながらも大変悔しい思いをしています。
大きな反省点です。
Actually, I was taking photos of cherry blossoms before I came across the mating scene.
Unfortunately, I had forgotten to adjust my camera settings, so I couldn’t take the photos as I wanted.
As you know, taking pictures of flowers and birds requires very different camera settings.
I realized my mistake right after I took the first shot, but since it was a momentary scene, I couldn’t do anything but keep clicking the shutter.
I should have been able to take about 40 photos, but because of this mistake, I only managed to take several.
Even now as I write this article, I feel very frustrated.
This was a big lesson learned.
